Have you ever started to feel like there are just so many different approaches to weight loss that you’ve got absolutely no idea which route to take first? If you answered yes to that question… first things first… know that you’re not alone! Working towards weight loss, or making any major life change for that matter, can certainly be overwhelming at times.

It seems like one reason why making life changes can feel so daunting is that there simply is no one right or wrong approach to take as you make those changes. A little something different works best for everyone. Which means that it’s going to take some experimenting and a whole lot of trial and error to figure out which approaches work best for you.

But I want to let you in on a little secret today. There is at least one weight loss tool that seems to be a secret weapon for all. Something that you can utilize no matter which approach you decide to take on your weight loss journey. Wait for it… planning! That’s right! Something as simple as making a weekly meal plan, a monthly workout plan, or even a daily plan to tackle habits like emotional eating can really go a long way on a weight loss journey. Here’s how…

Planning the way to a better future

One of my favorite sayings about planning goes like this…

A goal without a plan is just a wish” – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

In other words, it’s easy to know where you want to be. But it’s not as easy to get there until you feel confident that you know the directions. Plus, planning helps take those big daunting goals and break them down into smaller steps that feel more attainable. Weight loss is no different. And the good thing about planning is that once you’ve got it down, you can apply it to literally any habit that you want to make changes around.

Let’s look at weekly meal plans as an example. Putting together a weekly meal plan not only makes it easier to stay in calorie budget each day, but it also helps:

  • Manage your time efficiently
  • Make the best use of the resources you have available
  • Consolidate all of the specific details into one place
  • Relieve overwhelming feelings of stress and frustration
  • Prepare for those unpredictable “what-if” scenarios

Building your very own blueprints

Continuing on with our weekly meal plan example… the most exciting part about all of this is that you have the power to build your very own meal plan. You don’t have to eat what somebody else says you should eat. You don’t have to force yourself to love that vegetable that you hate. And you definitely don’t have to eat at a certain time of the day if that’s not the time of day when you’re feeling hungry. By building your own weekly meal plan, you get to make all of those decisions for yourself with your own personal needs, preferences, and circumstances in mind.

Now don’t get me wrong, there’s also nothing wrong with adopting a weekly meal plan that you saw somewhere else and felt would work well for you too. Or with using a weekly meal plan template or guide to help you get started. But the thing to remember is that… this is your personal plan. You get to call the shots and adjust your plan as needed.
